Asashoryu's victories wrap up Beijing trip of Japanese sumo team

Japan's sumo grand champion Asashoryu won a standing ovation from a mixed crowd as the Mongolian charged to victories to wrap up the two-day exhibition here, 31 years after a Japanese sumo team made their first ever visit to the Asian neighbor.

Cheers and applause lasted for about one minute from the 11,000 spectators from China, Japan and Mongolia as Asashoryu, losing to lower-ranked Chiyotaikai Saturday in the final, revenged himself to clinch the overall championship of the Beijing stage.

"Hello to all my Chinese friends. I am glad that you come to see Japan's sumo game," Asashoryu slurred in newly picked-up Chinese.

"And see you," said the Yokozuna, the highest rank of the traditional sport with a history of 1,500 years in Japan.

The 119-member team, consisting all the high-rank wrestlers of Japan, will leave for Shanghai Monday to present their second and last performance in China in commemoration of the 30th anniversaryof the two countries opening air traffic.

In the overall final, the 1.80-meter, 140kg Asashoryu neatly dodged Ozeki Chiyotaikai' powerful arm thrusts before the 24-year-old reigning Japanese champion watched a charging Chiyodaikai out over the straw ridge.

Approximately 10 minutes ago, Asashoryu defeated his fellow Mongolian Hakuho, a Maegashira, to take the title of the day.

Asashoryu overpowered Hokutoriki to capture his third straight Emperor's Cup on the final day of the Summer Grand Sumo Tournamenton May 23.

The last time a Japanese sumo team visited China was in 1973, to celebrate the normalization of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations.

"I congratulate on the wonderful success Japanese sumo team has made during their Beijing trip, which has been attached great importance by the Chinese government and attracted much attention from Chinese people," said Yu Zaiqing, vice president of the Chinese Olympic Committee.

"The brilliant performance of the wrestlers led the Chinese to appreciate the sport culture of Japan," he said.

"I'm honored to visit Beijing after 31 years," said Japan Sumo Association chairman Kitanoumi, also a member of the first sumo team coming to China.

"It will be great if the exhibition game promotes the culture exchange between China and Japan," he said.

Sympa cette série de photos ou l'on voit surtout Asashoryu.

Le texte est assez amusant quand on considère les manifestations anti-japonaises qui ont eu lieu en Chine il y a quelques mois. Ceci dit, à chaque fois que les japonais veulent renouer des liens avec leurs voisins, ils envoient les sumos au charbon. Peut-être que l'internationalisation du sumo répond à un besoin des japonais de montrer aux autres qu'ils ont évolué au point d'accepter des étrangers dans leur propre sport national.

Hélas, c'est peut-être l'un des derniers jungyo dans lequel la Kyokai sélectionne Tôki, car au vu des ses performances actuelles, je doûte qu'il soit dans les lutteurs qui seront amenés à Las Vegas.
Un comble : le Elvis du sumo qui manquerait le tournoi de Las Vegas ...
Mais bon, ce ne serait qu'un paradoxe de plus car Las Vegas est très visité par les touristes hawaiiens, et il n'y aura pas d'hawaiiens à Las Vegas, comme lutteurs, j'entends bien.
